As both a player of board games and RPGs, Familiarity with the rules is the ultimate goal, because when that happens they fall away and play takes center stage.
I’m finding that for me, there’s a sweet spot of rules and that exists around the level of Shadowdark or OSE. Both make some intuitive sense and can fit in my head. I haven’t played a ton of either, but there’s no frequently forgotten rules that I need a reminder on.
I still like heavier systems too (Pathfinder 2e, namely), but there’s only so much time to invest into these games and I can only fit so many heavier games into my repertoire.
